General Projects

Organisations who exclusively take on Gap year volunteers  (usually aged 18/19) tend to take on people for an entire year, placements change though usually these are teaching or community work, there are some conservation placements though:
  • GAP ACTIVITY PROJECTS: GAP is an educational charity with over 25 years experience of organising voluntary work placements overseas for UK school leavers in the year before they enter training, employment, or higher education, and need to be aged 18/19 during the project, also organise placements in the UK for volunteers from other countries on an exchange basis. GAP is committed to inter-cultural exchange and international understanding and to enabling you to give service to others. GAP currently sends over 1300 young people from the UK each year to over 30 countries world-wide.  Need to apply at the start of final school year, and selected applicants are usually interviewed in Reading.  Placements in many locations, though most conservation projects with GAP are in Australia.
Opportunities are with the Australian Trust for Conservation Volunteers and last for a minimum of 20 weeks (10 weeks in two different states). The work, typically land management rather than wildlife conservation, can be arduous and is certainly not glamorous. It includes tree planting, scrub clearance, seed collection, flora and fauna surveys or coastal stabilisation, there are a very small number of conservation opportunities are available for male volunteers in Paraguay and Ecuador in the National Parks. As well as undertaking practical tasks, you could find yourself guiding tourists or teaching English to Park staff.
You need to be physically fit, flexible, outgoing and able to work as part of a team.  The fee varies depending on the project & location.  Address: GAP House, 44 Queens Rd, Reading, RG1 4BB.
